Anthony Bennett in the Archibald, Wynne & Sulman finals

Congratulations to Anthony Bennett who has achieved the rare feat of having a work selected in the finals of the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes this year at the Art Gallery of NSW.

Winners are announced on 6 March.

Archibald Prize finalist honors also go to Melbourne-based artist, Mike Chavez for the inclusion of his portrait of Richard Bell.

Allyson Reynolds part of KickArts' Landscape exhibition

Allyson Reynolds’ Pneuma Series has been included in the exhibition "Points of View - Contemporary Landscapes" at Kickarts, 96 Abbott Street, Cairns.

The exhibition curated by Sam Creyton includes work by Edward Koumans and Lenore Howard and opens on 3 March (continues until 18 April).

Allyson Reynolds' film series on show at Doggett Street Studio

Allyson Reynolds exhibition "film" which was first exhibited at Museum of Brisbane at the end of 2008 will be exhibited at Doggett Street Studio, 85 Doggett Street, Newstead opening on 13 March.

The exhibition will continue to 4 April.

Stephen Baxter works part of Bundaberg landscape exhibition

Stephen Baxter work is currently part of the exhibition Land + Scape at the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery. The exhibition continues until 8 March and presents 111 works from the permanent collection, including Baxter's Australian Landscape No 4 (Phoenix) and Australian Landscape No 41 (River Bend).

Julie Hauritz shows at Green Thumbs and Lipstick

Green Thumbs and Lipstick is a new exhibition which showcases the paintings and sculptural works of Julie Hauritz, Nina Timonen and Sandy Guthrie opening at the Circle Gallery, 274 Montague Rd, West End from Friday 20 March until Sunday 22 March 2009.

Drawing workshops will also be conducted on Saturday 21 March, at 11am and 2pm. The $5 charge for the workshop will be donated to the Womens’ Legal Services, Annerley, to help them continue their excellent work with women.

New David Henderson work set for Graydon Gallery

David Henderson's exhibition of recent work opens on Friday 20 March, 6-8pm at Graydon Gallery (29 Merthyr Road, New Farm, Queensland). Subject matter will include Venice, Queensland and the human figure.  The exhibition continues every day until Sunday 29 March (10am - 6pm or by appointment).

Nicola Moss to study plant life in the Botanic Gardens

Nicola Moss has been selected as the 2009 artist in residence at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt.Coot-tha. Nicola will be working on site in the Australian Plant Communities area of the gardens throughout the year.

Explorations and studies of plant life diversity and connections within habitats will be developed in new works during the residency.

Mollie Bosworth part of Cassowary show in Carins

Mollie Bosworth will be exhibiting in a group exhibition - This is Cassowary Country - at the Cairns Regional Gallery (corner of Abbott and Shields Streets, Carins. Ph: 40464800) which runs from 11 April to 25 May with the official opening on 17 April (6.30pm - artist/curators talk at 6pm).

Curated by Laurel McKenzie, it features works from local artists in a range of mediums to engage the imagination and increase awareness of the endangered cassowary. Mollie will be showing new work in porcelain with applied images.

Leander D'Ambrosia work at PooL/09 Art Fair

Leander D’Ambrosia will be exhibiting several paintings in - Me, Me, Me’ PooL/09 Art Fair - to be held at Wyndham Garden Hotel (37 West 24th St, Chelsea, New York) which runs 6-8 March (3-10pm daily). PooL participates in New York art week and is held concurrently with other major art fairs such the Armory Show, Scope Art Fair, Pulse and Bridge.

Leander will also be exhibiting her contemporary jewellery works in ‘Solar Culture’ at the Solar Culture Gallery in Tucson, Arizona (31 East Toole Ave, Tucson, Arizona). The show is open now and continues through June.

Cate Collopy working on Q150

Cate Collopy is one of three artists who have been selected to work in 5 schools each for the Q150 - Landmark tree project. Each will work with students to develop mosaic and tile artwork seating to accompany the grove of trees to be planted at the 15 schools selected. The first school should launch in mid-May.
Cate will also be running a 5 week series of workshops for women at The Maker’s Table (West End, Brisbane) from 10 March. The workshops will re-use materials featuring techniques in small object & Jewelry construction ($17 includes materials & equipment).

New Simon McLean work at Yallingup Galleries

Simon Mclean’s next Annual Exhibition at Yallingup Galleries opens in the Garden Art Studio Gallery (Lot 134 Marrinup Drive, Yallingup) in the wine region of Yallingup-Margaret River, Western Australia on Saturday 7 March (until 17 March). The exhibition will also be available for viewing and sales online at Arthives and at Yallingup Galleries.

March Short Takes

Photographer Jo Erskine presents 'THROUGH THE LENS' in the Lobby and the 1st Floor of the Sofitel Gold Coast , 81 Surf Parade, Broadbeach  through to the end of April.

John Weeronga Bartoo is exhibiting in the "Ferrara Collective Exhibition" at the Erenus Art Gallery, Ankara, Turkey, opening on 4 March and continues until 14 March.

Karl de Waal is part of the group exhibiton - Temperature 2: New Queensland Art - now on at the Museum of Brisbane (Brisbane City Hall) until 8 June.

Diana Heath is taking part in - Vario - a folio swap between eleven Australian printmakers headed  by printmaker Tony Ameneiro and thirteen noted printmakers from the UK and USA. It is expected that this will tour through regional galleries. Diana is also part of - My Case’ 20x20cm print exhibition - which is to be shown in Hong Kong during March and May, and at the Queensland College of Art in August 2009.

Fiona Kennedy Aloft's solo exhibition "Doggone Good Fun" opens on Saturday 7 March at Robyn Bauer Studio Gallery (54 Latrobe Tce, Paddington, Brisbane). The show runs from 4-29 March.

Roger Lane will be part of a group exhibition - The March Show - at Charles Ginn Gallery (181 Latrobe Tce Paddington Qld. Ph: 3369 4156) which opens on 15 March at 3pm and continues until 2 April.

Des Rolph has had recent success with two back to back sell-out exhibitions. The first show at Cool Art Gallery, being an exhibition of drawings, and the second at The Gallery Eumundi which was an exhibition of drawings and paintings. The works in these exhibitions explored the relationship of the human and the animal in the landscape. Her next exhibition - Swamp Magic - opens at the Hyatt Regency Coolum on 4 April.

Robyn Bauer is holding an exhibition - Homecoming - in the Dalby Regional Gallery in May 2009. As Robyn was born and raised in Dalby this is particularly apt. The exhibition will consist of paintings by Nerida Howland and ceramic sculpture by Robyn Bauer. Official Opening on Saturday 2 May.
